Madinah Media was established to publish
books, audio recordings and videos relating to the work of Shaykh
Dr. Abdalqadir as-Sufi and the Murabitun World Movement.
It gathers together several former publishers and
imprints, including Diwan Press, and the current publishers Madinah
Press and Budgate Press.
The story of Madinah Media began with the early
publications of Shaykh Dr. Abdalqadir as-Sufi, which included the
first complete English translation of Al-Muwatta of Imam
Malik and of Qadi Iyad’s Ash‑Shifa – Muhammad
Messenger of Allah. These and many other of our titles were
translated by Aisha and Abdalhaqq Bewley, who with their work have
established a completely new standard and mode for English translations
of the texts of Islam, abandoning the Orientalist/christian ethos
and terminology which had dominated the field previously, yet steering
firmly away from the self‑interpreting selectivism of the sects
of esotericism.
There followed regular publications from Madinah
Press and Diwan Press all through the late 1970s, 1980s and 1990s,
establishing a corpus of teaching essential to those active Muslims
who want to understand our current position and act effectively for
the benefit of the World Muslim Community.
Most notable among the earlier publications were The
Meaning of Man by Sidi Ali al-Jamal of Fez and Root Islamic
Education by Shaykh Dr. Abdalqadir as-Sufi, which rediscovered
and explained the importance of the School of the ‘Amal of
the Ahl al-Madinah for the re-claiming of a genuine Islamic social
and political reality.
Shaykh Dr Abdalqadir’s early works, The
Book of Strangers (Ian Dallas) and The Way of Muhammad,
both best-sellers and instruments of ongoing Da’wa, can also
be counted among the heritage of Madinah Media.
1999 saw the publication, by associate publisher
Bookwork, of The Noble Qur’an – an New Rendering
of its Meaning in English by Abdalhaqq and Aisha Bewley. Written
in clear, modern English and based in 25 years of living with and
reciting the Qur’an and studying its major Tafsirs, this Emirates-approved
translation has become a world-recognised benchmark and has opened
up the Qur’an anew to countless readers in English.
Between 1999 and 2002, Shaykh Dr. Abdalqadir as-Sufi
wrote three books, Technique of the Coup de Banque, Letter
to an Arab Muslim and Sultaniyya which were to set
down his political thinking in relation to the Muslim polity and
his counsel to those Muslims committed to action.
In 2002 Madinah Press also published the monumental
reference study by Umar Ibrahim Vadillo, The Esoteric Deviation
in Islam, examining the esoteric and modernist deviations that
have arisen within the Muslim world over the past one hundred and
fifty years.
Sufis and Sufism: a Defence is our English
translation of the famous Maghribi defence of the great Sufi and ‘Alim
of the Hijaz, Shaykh Alawi al-Maliki, may Allah be pleased with him,
which is at the same time a defence of all of Sufism – Islam’s
pride and joy – against the venomous attacks of the wahhabi
sect.
Budgate Press was set up in 2005, and its first
publication was Ian Dallas – Collected Works, gathering
together the plays and prose written by Shaykh Dr. Abdalqadir as-Sufi
under his family name, Ian Dallas.
The website of Shaykh Dr. Abdalqadir as-Sufi, www.shaykhabdalqadir.com,
has been developed and maintained in conjunction with Madinah Media,
and has become the world’s leading Muslim website for socio-political
analysis and counsel. |
